Live-In Care

What is Live-In Care?

Live-in care provides you with a fully trained Personal Care Assistant (PCA) to help you retain your independence and live to your full potential in the comfort and familiar surroundings of your own home with care designed to meet your unique individual needs. If you currently receive care it is an alternative to residential care if your needs increase over time, ensuring your continued independence.

A live-in home care service is designed alongside you and tailored to you as a unique individual thereby offering you the most personalised solution. Live-in care is flexible and can be changed to meet your changing needs on a daily basis. Live-in care gives you peace of mind knowing that your carer is present 365 days a year providing round the clock reassurance. Knowing that someone is on hand – at all times – and on a one to one basis – removes any worry you or your family may have about your safety and well-being.

People feel better living at home; gaining comfort and stability from their familiar surroundings. By assigning regular carers to work with you, you are provided with excellent continuity of care which is reassuring for you and your family.  You do not have to adjust your lifestyle to suit our schedule; our services are designed around your needs and your personal care assistants are directed in their work by you.

Unlike residential care, friends and family can continue to visit you – at times to suit you rather than just during visiting hours. You carer is exclusive to you, whereas in a residential home you share your care staff. At home, you are at minimum risk of infectious diseases that often circulate in the care and nursing home environment. Your meals and refreshments are prepared as you want them and at times to suit you rather than set meal times or when staff are available.

In addition to care and companionship, our live-in care services can provide specialist support and care for complex conditions including Physical Disabilities, Dementia/Alzheimers, Parkinson’s Disease, Strokes (aneurysms) as well as neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease.  We also have care teams specialised in End of Life Care.

We are also happy to provide live-in carers for peace of mind, companionship and personal welfare and wellbeing, even where no personal care is required.

What Do Live-In Carers Do?

Our carers happily provide:

  • personal care including dressing, washing, oral and hair care and toileting
  • assistance with medication
  • companionship and lifestyle support:
    • attendance at social and entertainment events
    • holidays and outings
    • university/college or employment support
    • transporting or escorting to appointments
  • general light housework including shopping and laundry
  • care of pets and light gardening duties
  • help with paying bills and managing your money
  • total freedom of choice in how you live your daily life

We can provide live-in care on either a long term or short term basis. We can also provide live-in care even if you only require care for a short period either following a hospital stay or if your usual family carers are unavailable.  Our care assistants can provide a respite care package on a live-in or a visiting basis to give your regular carer a break or if they fall ill.

We realise that having the most suitable carers to care for you is paramount and we pride ourselves on matching our staff and clients to ensure the best possible fit for both parties. We will work with you on an on-going basis to ensure you are happy with your care package and provide an out of hour’s service for emergencies.

Our service starts with a free consultation and assessment of your needs by our dedicated Live-in Care Manager so that we can agree a care plan that suits your personal needs. We will also liaise with other professionals who have an input to your care to ensure the best all round communications and excellent service.

We can also give you details of a specialist independent consultant to assist you in deciding the best way to fund your care. We can assist you with Direct Payment arrangements if you are entitled to local authority funding.

Live-In Care Options

There are three ways we can assist you with live-in care.

a) We can arrange for self-employed live-in personal care assistants to work with you on a rotating basis e.g. 2 or 4 week periods where you pay the carers directly on a service basis. Care at Home will be responsible for the recruitment, training and vetting of the carers, organise the working periods, provide cover in the event of illness and monitor the quality of the service provided to ensure you are fully satisfied. The Personal Care Assistant will be self-employed and responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions and their own liability insurance. There is an agency fee to cover administration, recruitment and training costs and the supply of aprons and gloves.

b) We can provide you with a Personal Care Assistant employed by us, taking away all the worry of the financial side of managing your care package.

c) If you prefer to employ your own permanent live-in carer, Care at Home can help you with the recruitment, training and vetting of fully trained care staff sourced by ourselves and chosen by you. Care at Home can provide backup for your permanently employed staff in the event of illness and holidays. In this case, you would be fully responsible for their tax and NI contributions as well as employer liability.

These options can be discussed in detail prior to commencing your care and you can make an informed decision of what is best for you.
